The Magic of Libraries - Part II

The Magic of Libraries - Part II

Once upon a time, in the days of the card catalogue, books and other tangible reading materials were the only reason I would go to the library. I would stock up on books in the Christmas holidays and get antsy when they closed for the Christmas-New Year period because what would I do if I ran out of books to read? Nowadays, the library never closes!

That’s because libraries now have eCollections you can access at any time of the day or night - collections of:

  • Fiction and non-fiction books

  • Audio books

  • Newspapers and magazines

  • Movies and TV Series

  • Animated Storybooks

Your library card gives you access to all this online content and more and all you need is a device and, often, to download an app.

Have a device but not enough data to download a few books each month? Skip on down to the library and use your library card to log into the wifi there and download all you need. It really is like magic.

Don’t have a modern device? Chances are you’re already a step ahead and are reading this on the computer at your local library. For the rest of you, it’s handy to know that libraries have computers and printers for those times when the internet is down or you need that one ticket/voucher printed out and the last printer you owned needed dot matrix paper.

Seriously though, we live in the modern world and keeping up with technological advances can be expensive and difficult. Check out your local library for technology-themed learning focusing on all sorts of devices and skills and ask about short-term loans of iPads, tablets and Chromebooks. Geelong Regional Libraries even have an upcoming session to teach people how to use the Geelong Libraries App, (where you can search the library catalogue, put books on hold…). Pure Magic!
