Cubby building with young children
If I were making a list of things I have found enjoyable to do with my young children, cubby building would be right up there.
Sometimes it’s surprising to find what we enjoy, and it can be worth taking note of the things we like doing with our child/ren. Those times when we aren’t thinking about other tasks we could be doing instead, checking the time or wondering when we can go home and nap!
I feel like my kids have also really liked cubby building, and that one reason they have enjoyed it is that they noticed I was having fun.
They notice when we are in that moment with them.
As well as being enjoyable to build and create, cubby houses can offer special quiet spaces for imaginative play, as well as creating cosy places for eating, reading and napping.
Building cubbies can foster independence and creativity. They can also give children the chance to solve problems and do heavy work.
Autumn is the perfect time for cubby building. Next time you’re out for a picnic or bushwalk, throw a few old blankets in the car or pram to help bring some colour and comfort to the homes you create. You could bring along a book as well, to snuggle inside and read together.
You might also find a few beautiful places with cubbies that other people have made that you can enjoy.
