Stuck for creative inspiration? Join a toy library!

This week my son is obsessed with rockets. A month ago, all he cared about was fairies. And a month before that, nothing could get his attention away from a digger.

It can be hard to keep up with forever-changing passions and interests in our little ones. On top of that, it can often seem very expensive and cluttering!

However, on the weekend I went back to my toy library for the first time in months, and I was reminded of how perfect toy libraries can be for adults and kids alike! Here are some things I love about them.

1.        You can follow your child’s interests
I was able to find a developmentally appropriate puzzle and a Duplo set that have rockets! And I know that in a couple of weeks’ time, when my little one has had enough of rockets, there will be other themes I can latch onto!

2.        You can practise social skills like sharing
Help your little one practise keeping track of parts, cleaning toys and returning them for others to enjoy.

3.        There are musical instruments!
Some toy libraries have some high-quality musical instruments in their collection! These can add some great variety to your favourite songs at home.

4.        It is a great way to connect with other families
As most toy libraries are run by member-volunteers, the people you run into can be friendly connections to make. You may find another local family with similar interests. Some toy libraries host events to help their members connect.

5.        It is better for the environment
Toys libraries help to extend the life of toys and help to maximise their use before reaching landfill.

6.        It is better for our wallets
Although there is a cost to most toy libraries (yearly membership and volunteering of time), the amount of money saved can be enormous. Some families find themselves saving thousands of dollars a year.

7.        A membership can be a great gift
Feeling overwhelmed by all the STUFF that comes in when your little one has a birthday? Ask your friends or family to help pay your subscription instead – that way, you can all see the benefits the whole year ‘round!
