The crafty hat that never dates
Rosy cheeks and a newspaper hat from the Victorian era
Not so long ago, newspapers were a part of everyday life. A source of news AND a resource that was then super useful around the house… with a newspaper on hand there was always big sheets of paper available for covering a table, wrapping a breakable or dabbling in a spot of papier mache.
These days we get our newsfeed in lots of different “paper free” ways, and the rise of digital media means there’s way less demand for the printed product. While I still treat myself to the weekend papers (oh it’s just sooo nice to read from pages spread across the table) a pile of newspapers has become a thing of the past. In my school artroom they’re now quite a sought after resource.
Yet just one sheet of newspaper is all you need to create a classic newspaper hat. What could be cuter and easier. While writing this piece I took a little wander around the internet and found these pictures of newspaper hats dating from the mid 1800s. Classic!
Dress the doggo… gun not recommended!
All my local newspapers seem to be tabloid size these days which is perfect. If you happen to have a broadsheet sized newspaper simply old it in half. If you don’t have any newspaper at all you can use any paper of a similar size (that is 28 cm x 43 cm). Finally, if you don’t have any large paper you can make all sorts of smaller hats for teddy or the dog!
The folding bit is easy: the following guide produces the basic shape that can be decorated, drawn on or added to in endless ways.
